Returning to the safety of Everest Base Camp, trekking down to meet her team on the 17th of May 2010 make Bonita Norris become the youngest Briton ever to summit the world’s highest peak. The record of Victoria James at this age of 25 has been eclipsed by Bonita (from Berkshire, Great Britain) when she climbed Everest at the age of 22.

In the wake of her achievement, a number of newspapers have focused, rather disrespectfully, upon Bonita’s novice status as a climber, picking up on the remarkable fact that in 2008, she had never before climbed a mountain. Going from unfit to Everest’s summit within two years is quite a feat, but it belies the fact that Bonita had trained and prepared fully for the task.

Ten days prior to her summit bid, and impatient for a propitious gap in the winter weather, Bonita quit Base Camp for a few days, heading down the Everest Base Camp Trek route towards Pangboche.

On her blog she said how, by descending to “thick air,” she “felt like a super charged human” with “rugby player thighs”, demonstrating how well she had acclimatised to the reduced oxygen at altitude.

Training for Everest

There’s no denying that Bonita’s development was remarkably quick between her statement of intent in 2008 and completing her goal. In fitness training, she was clocking some fifty miles per week jogging, as well as participating in “extreme marathon” events. To practise climbing, she began by trekking up Snowdon in wintery conditions, and progressed to learning more technical climbing techniques from experienced mountaineers.

Along the way to Everest, Bonita set a world record for being the youngest woman ever to summit Nepal’s formidable Mount Manaslu (8,163m). Then came the acclimatisation effort, with further training climbs along the route of the famous Everest Base Camp Trek.

Despite Bonita’s diligence, her Everest success coincides with that of 13-year-old Jordan Romero, which has led to suggestions in the media that climbing Everest has become ‘too easy’.

Sagarmatha: Safer and Smarter

There is no avoiding the fact that with addition of climbing lines, extensive Sherpa assistance, weather prediction technology and the services at Everest Base Camp, trekking to the top of the world has become a safer than it once was. But the commentators who imply it is easy are mistaken. No one should come to Mount Everest presuming that success is guaranteed; even in a climbing season such as the one we have just seen in 2010, two mountaineers not only suffered failure but also serious injury while attempting to reach the summit.

There is no belittling the mountain, or the achievements of those who have summited. When Bonita embarked from Everest Base Camp to trek towards the summit, she crossed crevasses, avalanche fields, and made steady progress up the mountain’s storm-buffeted sides. After these difficulties, climbers will reach altitudes in excess of the infamous 8,000 metre mark where the air becomes unspeakably thin.

It Doesn’t Get Any Shorter

Rugby star, Josh Lewsey, another amateur climber hoping to reach the top this season, put things quite succinctly when he commented that Everest “doesn’t get any shorter.”

I think the ‘mountaineering purists’ have been misrepresented in reports. Any dissatisfaction the media has picked up on from veteran climbers is in fact related to Mount Everest’s popularity, rather than the ease of the climb. Contrary to one article that suggested Everest has lost “its lustre as a benchmark of adventure,” the mountaineers are reacting to some recent congestion on the trek up from Everest Base Camp to the summit.

Over the years there has been an increase in the concentration of climbing activity packed into a narrow, busy weather window. The fact that the successful summit bids are condensed into a matter of hours within a season simply shows that “the Goddess of the Sky”, Sagarmatha, doesn’t just let anyone march up and down her whenever they please.

Giant Cupcake Baking Tins

The whole point of a cupcake is that it’s just the right size for one person. But you’d have to be an incredibly greedy person to scoff a cupcake baked in our Giant Cupcake Tin. It’s huge!

Ideal for any occasion (apart from a cake-oholics anonymous meet), this professional weight, cast aluminium, non-stick pan lets you create the mother of all cupcakes. Simply whip up your tasty mixture (use your own recipe or follow the one that’s included), pour half in the base section and half in the top, then pop the whole shebang into the oven for around 50 minutes.

Once your mighty cake is cooked, wait for it to cool, stick both halves together with a bit of icing then get busy decorating it with icing, sprinkles, choccy bits or whatever else takes your fancy. Let them eat cake? Absolutely!

If you’re wondering why anyone would want to gorge on a confection of such ludicrous proportions we’d like to point you in the direction of Mallory’s famous ‘because it’s there’ quote.

Yes, we know he was talking about Everest but the sentiment is the same. When faced with a cake this awesome, the only thing any rational human being can do is take a walloping great bite out of it. Yum!

But seriously folks, the real point of baking a cupcake this big is so that you can share it with friends. Plus you won’t have to faff around making loads of individual cupcakes. Indeed, this ginormous tin will accommodate a cake big enough to give 10-12 servings. It’s great for kids’ birthday parties and supersize dinner soirees. And if you ever tire of humungous cupcakes you can use it for chocolate, jelly or ice cream.

Dishwasher safe, the Giant Cupcake Tin is guaranteed for life. Electric word life. It means forever and that’s a mighty long time…hold on, why are we quoting Prince? We’ve no idea but we assume he loves cupcakes as much as everyone else. After all, what’s not to like? Especially when they’re this big. Mmm…cupcake!

Melbourne walks have become a popular activity that is indulged in by locals and tourists alike. A number of walks that are self-guided tours have been developed through the planning of the City of Melbourne and Federation Square. The event is divided into eight parts so that visitors might select whichever venue they want to pursue. Picturesque, informative and relaxing it’s a wonderful way to experience Melbourne city life.

The first section is dedicated to what is called “A Walk in the Park”. This tour takes approximately two hours to complete and takes the traveller through places like Hosier Lane and Fitzroy Gardens. Commencing the walk from Federation Square, the map will lead you next to St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral and subsequently to pass places such as Lutheran Church, St. Patrick’s College and Federation Bells; after which the route will lead you in a full circle back to Federation Square.

If that is not your niche the walks offer a tour of the Secret Gardens, where the art lover can submerge himself or herself in monuments, sculptures and the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens as well as the Arts Centre. The tour named “On the Waterfront” is another two hour long journey of discovery that winds along the Yarra River on its Northern and Southern Banks.

Exploring the winding streets, hidden alleys and lanes with cafes, arcades and shops is another attraction that can be experienced through the guided tour named “Arcades and Lanes”, but if you prefer witnessing the bigger picture “The Cosmopolitan” tour will ensure that Collins St, Chinatown and high class shopping are on the map along with some breathtaking sights of the city. For the consummate outdoor adventurer, the tours have provided “Sports and Entertainment” where a visit to Melbourne’s sports precinct and the Birrarung Marr is suggested, and the “Elegant Enclave” will have the traveller witnessing the spacious verandas, elegant columns and intricate ironwork of the Victorian era.

Last but not least, the tours have provided for a visit to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in the “MCEC to Federation Square” tour – where a stroll along the South Wharf precinct will wind its way towards the Convention Centre.

When looking at the number of luxury 5 star hotelsthat are in and around the city of Melbourne, it’s always best to choose a hotel that has a reputation that precedes itself. One such establishment is The Langham Brand hotel. Renowned for its luxurious, spacious settings and accommodations the hotel in Melbourne is the very epitome of what makes this luxury hotels collectionone of the best in the world.

Although there are a wide range of sports available for people to participate in, there are usually specific requirements for the activity that are expected with every unique participant. It is because of the variety of these expectations that such an array of options is available in the first place, creating diversity and strength within the world of sports.

Usually, the expectation is that the sport will be engaging and fun, as well as providing a physical benefit due to the exertion and output of effort involved in playing. This in not unrealistic, as every option (with the exception of a select few choices) will give a physical benefit to the person engaged in the activity, simply by virtue of motion and repetition, if nothing else.

For some people, these sports need to be played in a controlled setting in order to be rewarding. People like these options because the setting is ordered and predictable, and they only need to keep track of a few variables in order to succeed.

Others may need their activity to be played in a team setting, because they want to feel like something bigger than themselves, and they enjoy the social experience that is associated with the sport. For these participants, it is the experience of being with people that defines the activity, allowing them to share in the ups and downs of play.

Still others may prefer solo experiences that occur in outdoor settings, because they enjoy the solitary experience and the scenery, and they like their physical challenges to occur in uncontrolled settings that can be dynamic and tough to overcome. These people are more adaptive and like the experience itself, and they like to pit their own abilities against personal weakness or the landscape.

It is in this group of people that mountain biking occurs, because it is a challenging sport that relies entirely on the individual to use their own facilities to conquer the landscape as they go. While it can be a social experience as riders ascend difficult trails together, the fact of the matter is that people riding mountain bikes have to put in all of the effort needed to make any progress, and other participants simply cannot help.

Mountain biking is done by having the person participating in the activity ride a specially designed bike over the landscape, usually sticking to a set trail or path in the process. The experience is a unique one, because there is a marked increase in difficulty and technicality because of the way that the terrain changes and is composed of unyielding elements that cannot simply be glided over like the street or sidewalk can.

The equipment is usually made out of a sturdy frame, on which is mounted shortened handlebars and specially contoured tires, which is designed to give the maximum advantage against the elements that it can. Having the right equipment is critical in this setting, because a standard issue model that is meant for the street will quickly fail when the user attempts to conquer a trail while using it.

There are many physical benefits associated with the sport, because of the amount of effort, pacing, and strength that is required to find success on the trails. Biking in this setting builds strength and endurance, and conditions the muscle groups that are being used in the process.

The difficulties of the trails require explosive bursts of strength and effort when getting over obstacles, because slowly creeping over them is simply not an option in some situations. This strength increases the raw power of the legs, as well as conditioning the heart to be better prepared for such massive expenditures of energy.

Endurance is also built because of the slow and steady pace that is a part of the process on less demanding areas. Usually, during long stretched the person must gear down and pedal at a measured and easy pace in order to reach an objective without stopping.

Mountain biking is a dynamic, fun experience that offers the participant a thorough challenge as they get to enjoy a range of scenery along the way. It is a sport that provides many active physical benefits to the user, and can be used to release stress and engage in a positive hobby as well.

Are you stuck in a dead end job? Is your career going nowhere? Have you struggled beforehand to get past an employment interview for that fantastic job? Fear not – there is an answer to your questions! Just set up your own bicycle shop business – but where do you start off?

So how do you run a business? You have continually been the one who is told what to do. Straight away the shoe is truly on the other foot – you give out the orders now. But what commands do you give to your staff? What signals do you transmit? How do you realize if what you are doing or saying is the right thing for your new bicycle shop business? It was undemanding before…the boss spoke…and you did what he/she said and you got rewarded at the end of the day. Having your own venture is a little harder, if you get things incorrect now, not only will you not get rewarded (or get paid less), your decisions could impact in the negative upon your workers.

Be sensible when running your own business – for definite you want to make wealth, but not at all costs.

What are the costs of business compared with just being a member of staff? You have more duty to yourself, your relatives and employees if you have any – they are all reliant on you for their financial security. Scary! Running your own business habitually means working longer hours and you may well not make any cash from working those longer hours where before you may have got paid per hour/day. A guaranteed salary!

Although, of course, the money helps!

Having something to attest is also an excellent motivator. Having a parent, spouse, sibling or other major personality that is doing all right in business creates a fantastic motivation for others to attempt.

Not out of a feeling of competition but for the reason that it is understandable to be aware of the love people get from running their own business, and their own lives.

We live on a big planet; their are hundreds of bicycle shop businesses – but they are not all identical; as a new businessman/woman it is your responsibility to run your business the finest way you see fit via your experiences you’ve derived in life so far.

Hardly any people begin their own business – most people do not have the knowledge. The point is do you have it? Are you motivated to be a success in business as well as in life?

Start your bicycle shop business now!

Phillip Island is 140km [about two hours] drive from Melbourne, Victoria. It has an airport and a road links San Remo on the mainland to Newhaven on the island.
Although in size only about 10 000 hectares, about 1.5 million people visit the island each year. It has a rocky coastline with sand dunes, coves and beaches, making it a really lovely holiday destination as well as providing a safe habitat for the little fairy penguins and the largest colony of fur seals in the Southern Hemisphere. There are also a host of other seabirds and wildlife such as koalas. These are sensitively preserved and used as an education medium to teach people about the preservation of the ecology of the area.
If eco tourism and environmental issues are close to your heart you will feel right at home on Phillip Island. There are ranger talks with explorations and walkabouts through the natural beauties of the island.

These involve all sorts of hands-on learning experiences. You will really enjoy bird watching, attending the feeding of the pelicans, a visit to the Koala sanctuary, the famous penguin parade and the nature parks.
To enjoy the spectacular scenery you may opt for a helicopter flight.
At ground/sea level there are bus tours to Phillip Island as well as cruises to observe the beautiful coast and coastal aquatic life, including sea birds and the famous penguins and seals. Most of these depart from Melbourne.
If you are energetic you will love the seemingly endless tracks and trails for walking or horse riding. These will bring you intimately close to the beauties of nature.
Other really interesting things to see are the blow hole, the mangrove swamp and a shipwreck.
Beautiful beaches with safe swimming are big draw cards, and all manner of water-sports and water fun activities are available. Some are even taught if you don’t know how.
Apart from enjoying the magnificent coastal scenery, nature, and aquatic activities, you can also have a round of golf or mini golf. There are facilities for tennis, bowls, ten pin bowling and cycling too.
Although Phillip Island is known primarily as an eco-resort, you will find nightlife as well. For art lovers there are several galleries in Cowes, as well as The Coast Arts and Music Festival and the Pyramid Rock festival.
Phillip Island is world renowned for its hosting of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and World Super bike Round. The V8 Super cars also race at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
Fun things for the family could include a visit to the chocolate factory or you could enjoy an Australian working farm experience on Churchill Island.
For military history enthusiasts the Vietnam military museum is not to be missed.
You might be interested to visit one of the wineries too.
Phillip Island is a significant educational destination with an indoor and outdoor maze /puzzle /adventure centre to captivate the young and young-at-heart, as well as an impressive lifestyle development centre.
It is hard to believe that such a tiny area can hold so much for so many different tastes, but it is so. Go ahead and enjoy your stay on Phillip Island.

Are you new to the Star Trek universe? Have you seen the new movie and want more? Want to know where to jump in and start exploring?

The answer is in Star Trek DVDs. Rather than reading the books, or trying to catch Star Trek on TV, you will have a much more enjoyable experience if you get a set of DVDs.

This way, at your leisure, you can start at the beginning of a given set of stories, and follow the different threads over several episodes. You will also discover jokes that have become ‘in’ jokes, and really enjoy seeing these jokes recurring as the characters develop.

There are five main series of Star Trek stories:
1. The Original Series, also known as TOS
2. The Next Generation, also known as TNG
3. Voyager
4. Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9 or DSN
5. Enterprise, later renamed Star Trek Enterprise

The film you saw tells the story of how Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, and the rest met.

Their first voyage. So, you might enjoy following the alternate time line starting with The Original Series. You’ll follow Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhuru and co on their adventures, as they “explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no man has gone before”. You’ll see the gadgets and technology that were quite revolutionary in their day. You’ll see the interesting situations they encounter, and their sometimes quirky solutions.

You could then move unto The Next Generation which takes place in the 24th century, nearly 100 years after Kirk and co. In TNG you’ll meet the reserved ship commander, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the more Kirk-like second-in-command, William Riker, and the Spock-like android, Data. And you’ll watch incredibly thought provoking and entertaining stories of the crew exploring space, exploring different ways of living, exploring complex moral dilemmas, and meeting new aliens – both benign and formidable.

Then you’d want to delve into Voyager. The Federation Starship U.S.S. Voyager has been taken far away to the to the Delta Quadrant on the other side of the galaxy. Unwillingly. Captain Kathryn Janeway must get her crew home. That journey will take seventy years, unless they can find a short cut. As they head home, searching for ways to shorten the length of their journey, you’ll enjoy watching the crew wrestle with familiar moral and ethical issues made unique by extraordinary circumstances.

Deep Space Nine is a busy space station by a wormhole. The wormhole makes travel between the Alpha and Gamma quadrants possible. It brings a load of new aliens, new lifestyles, new religions, new friends, and new adversaries. It’s scope is huge. You’ll want to watch this set next. It contains sophisticated, interlocking storyline that build up to an enormously dramatic climax, and then set off in surprising directions.

Enterprise is a prequel series set 150 years before TOS and the new Star Trek film you watched. But I suggest you watch it last because I think it’s so much more rewarding to watch retrospectively. Watching how new technology is introduced and received, makes for very entertaining viewing. Technologies like phase pistols and rarely used, still-risky transporters. And you get to watch a lot of daring, pioneering adventures, all the more enthralling because we know just how much they – Archer and his people – don’t know.

Leadership Training Melbourne – Exercising in different environments.

Why did I suggest that?

I mean, we have a beautiful environment that numerous people come and train there each day. I would encourage those people to choose a number of different place to go and train. And the reason why, the main reason why is to remain engaged in the activity. To continually stimulate yourselves mentally and physically and in some cases emotionally.

So, for me, it’s about going for a walk perhaps, on a bush track. Or taking an alternate route in terms of a bike ride when riding through the foothills in Panton Hills or up in Kangaroo Grounds.

So, it’s about constantly changing the environment and therefore, constantly stimulating your brain, constantly stimulating your different senses. In that way, we found that you continue to engage and reengage in the whole experience.

I know that there are many who love routine and love an environment that doesn’t change. And there are people that can work within that because there’s certainty, there’s familiarity. They don’t have to think. They know exactly where the piece of equipment is. What you may not know is if you continue using the same muscles, using the same equipment on a regular basis, you’ll plateau. The muscles reach a point where there’s no longer enough stimulus or the stimulus is the same and the body goes, “Well, I don’t need to change.” So, by increasing the repetition or the activity or changing the dynamic movement, that in itself will continue to create changes within your body.

So, I’m encouraging you to consider two things: one is your environment. I mean there’s nothing like going away on a holiday and going to a new gym. It may be to see that in spite some new training range, maybe you’re in this environment and you see somebody doing an exercise you’ve never observed before. Maybe in this environment, there was certain colors or certain music that engaged you at a place where you would once before been on a high. So, I find that constantly changing the environment, constantly changing the activities in the exercises that we do will continue to reengage you.

When we conduct Leadership Training Melbourne, we mix up the styles and the types of interactions we have with the people we are training to keep them engaged.

So that will allow you to mentally, physically and emotionally engage through a variety of activities. And you will enjoy longevity.

The American area of Reno is often referred to as the adventure place of America. There is a wealth of recreational activities on offer within this area including lake mountain biking. There are a vast number of different biking trails within the area and these vary in length. There are some trails that are located near Lake Tahoe and also Sierra Nevada. The amount of possibilities for mountain bikers is actually endless within this area.

The area of Reno is located within the northern part of Nevada among the high desert. This weather within this area is also great for biking as they can be used all year round. The summer months in Reno are not too hot so you do not feel too hot to exercise and the area very rarely sees any snow during the winter months.

There are some wonderful lake mountain biking trails that circle Lake Tahoe. Biking within this area is a must for all keen mountain bikers.

There are so many trails around this area that it is possible to do a different trail every single day, if you so wish.

As well as the lake mountain biking trails there is also a lot of urban biking trails. Some of the urban trails run across foothills and some climb the canyons and flats that are located within the northwestern part of Reno.

Biking within the area of Reno is excellent and can be enjoyed by all members of the family. There is a vast array of bike shops within the area so it is possible to get anything that you require to make your adventure memorable. One thing to always consider when choosing trails is the elevation as the area goes up to about six thousand feet but there are some places that are higher than this. It is best to take it easy when you first start mountain biking and gradually build up to the more adventurous trails.

A giant sinkhole, 12m deep and 80cm in diameter, appeared under Guatemalan 65-year-old Inocenta Hernandez’s bed on 19 July, 2011.

Ms. Inocenta Hernandez from Guatemala City was anxious when hearing a sudden noise and thinking there had been an explosion nearby: it was a gas canister blast at a neighbour’s house. At first, she run outside and after that she realized the problem was inside her home, she returned and found a gaping, three feet wide, 40 feet deep hole beneath her bed. She said: “We rushed out to look and saw nothing. A gentleman told me that the noise came from my house, and we searched until we found it under my bed.” The 65-year-old Hernandez was relieved that the damage was only to her house, and hadn’t harmed her grandchildren, who had been playing near the bed.

A man inspecting measures the depth of a sinkhole under Inocenta Hernandez’s bed in Guatemala City on July 19

Guatemala City, built on volcanic deposits, is especially prone to sinkholes, often blamed for tropical rain storms

A sinkhole caused by a failing drainage system was seen inside a property that houses ten families in Guatemala City on June 18, 2010

Another giant hole caused by the rains of Tropical Storm Agatha in Guatemala City on June 2, 2010. It collapsed roads and highway bridges, buried homes under mud and killed at least 180 people

Guatemala City built on volcanic deposits is especially prone to appearing giant chasms because of tropical rain storms. Sinkholes are natural depressions in the earth that can range anywhere from a few feet to hundreds of acres wide, measure a shallow foot to 100 feet deep and can be gradual but are often sudden. In 2007, the country’s largest hole reported to be about 60 feet (18 meters) wide and about 300 feet (100 meters) deep swallowed homes and a truck and killed three people as the ground suddenly gave way. In addition, some massive pits opened up in Guatemala City back in 2010; it swallowed up a three-storey building and an intersection.

A huge pit was in Guatemala City on May 31, 2010. At that time, more than 94,000 people were evacuated as the storm buried homes under mud, swept away a highway bridge near Guatemala City

Several homes were swallowed and three people were confirmed missing because of a massive chasm in Guatemala City on February 23, 2007
